David and Isaac Garazi combine years of experience with the latest technologies to perform even the most complicated dental extractions. Whether your wisdom tooth is partially or fully erupted, rest assured you are in capable hands.
Wisdom teeth (third molars) are the last teeth to erupt, usually between ages 17 and 21 ( the so-called “age of wisdom”). Anthropologists believe wisdom teeth were necessary for our ancestors to eat raw meat, tough roots, etc. Over the years, the human diet has been more refined to the point we don’t need as much chewing power.
With softer, easy-to-chew foods, wisdom teeth are no longer necessary, and the jawbone anatomy has evolved and become shorter. Today, your jawbone can’t comfortably accommodate 32 teeth. So, when wisdom teeth come in after all other teeth have erupted, there is hardly any space for healthy eruption.
If wisdom teeth grow healthy and straight, they don’t need removal. However, wisdom teeth rarely grow without causing problems. Due to insufficient space, most wisdom teeth grow sideways or become partially or wholly impacted in the jawbone.
Wisdom teeth can cause several issues, including:
Early evaluation is the best way to manage problems associated with wisdom teeth. Removal not only resolves current problems but also prevents future complications.
The location or severity of the damage determines whether your wisdom tooth needs to be extracted. Whatever the case, wisdom teeth are removed safely and painlessly in our office. Our doctors use powerful anesthetics and sedation dentistry to optimize your comfort.
Our doctors have a wealth of experience in removing wisdom teeth, from simple cases to the most complicated ones. If the wisdom tooth is accessible in the mouth, the dentist wiggles the tooth in several motions to detach it from the periodontal ligaments before pulling it out in one piece.
For impacted teeth, a surgical extraction will be necessary. The doctor will make a small incision on the gums and possibly remove some of the underlying bone to access the tooth. The tooth is then broken into pieces for easier removal. Finally, the dentist will clean the area and suture the wound to kick-start healing.
After wisdom tooth extraction, proper care is essential to maximize healing, manage pain, and prevent complications like dry socket or infection. Some bleeding is expected within 24 hours, but biting on gauze helps control it. Mild to moderate swelling is common and peaks within 48 hours. Apply ice packs (20 minutes on, 20 minutes off) to reduce swelling. We’ll also prescribe over-the-counter pain medications for a painless recovery.
Our post-op instructions also guide nutrition and oral hygiene to ensure you get back on your feet quickly. Most people recover within 1-2 weeks, but complete healing of the extraction site may take 1-3 months.
