While our visual exams are exhaustive, not all dental issues happen in plain sight. Dental X-rays allow us to visualize dental problems beyond the reach of the naked eye.Â
Dental X-rays are needed for:Â
Our team will also likely recommend dental X-rays for new patients or if you have never been to a dentist for over two years. Dental X-rays allow us to detect dental issues that otherwise would likely be missed.Â
The safety of X-rays is a genuine concern, given that film-based X-rays expose patients to a significant amount of radiation. The truth is that modern X-rays are very safe.Â
Digital X-rays expose patients to very low radiation levels, significantly less than what they are exposed to in their everyday environment. In fact, the ADA and the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology (AAOMR) state that protective aprons or thyroid collars are no longer necessary, indicating confidence in the low risk involved.
What about X-rays for pregnant women? Digital radiographs are safe for pregnant women, with exposure levels up to 30,000 times lower than what would be needed to cause harm. This advanced imaging is designed to maximize the mother’s and unborn baby’s safety.
Despite its safety record, we only recommend dental X-rays when they are absolutely needed to minimize unnecessary exposure. According to the American Dental Association (ADA), dental X-rays are necessary every 2-3 years. However, if you are a high-risk patient, dental X-rays will be required at least twice annually or as per the dentist’s recommendations.
Not all dental X-rays are the same. Dentists use different X-rays depending on what they want to see.Â
Here are the common dental X-rays:Â
Dental X-rays are the roadmap for safe, precise, and successful treatment outcomes, making them indispensable in modern dentistry. Want to learn more about dental X-rays? Call (305) 690-0611 and talk to Garazi Periodontics & Dental Implants.Â
