Why Would I Need a Tooth Removed?
If you fear oral extraction, you may have a misconception about this treatment. Dental extractions are common procedures performed by most dentists today. Learning more about tooth extraction and its need can help relieve any concerns about this treatment. Garazi Periodontics & Dental Implants offers safe and effective oral extraction services near you in Miami, Florida. Dr. David Garazi answers your questions about oral extractions here.
Why would a tooth need to be extracted?
There are several reasons why Dr. Garazi and our team may recommend having a tooth removed. Here are a few:
- Irreparable structural damage to your tooth.
- Severe decay that can’t be repaired.
- Extensive bone loss caused by periodontal disease.
- To address problems with overcrowding.
- Impacted wisdom tooth.
Extraction is generally a last resort when no other treatment can help restore your tooth or resolve issues with your oral health.
How are teeth extracted?
Depending on the reason for extraction, Dr. Garazi may perform a simple or surgical extraction. Both are done with the use of anesthesia for a painless treatment. Sedation is also an option, particularly for surgical removals. If the tooth can be reached above the gum line, we’ll use forceps or other dental tools to loosen your tooth and pull it out. If your tooth is impacted or broken at the gum line, we may need to cut your gum and remove bone tissue blocking your tooth before we can have it removed.
How long will it take for the gum to heal?
Healing of the extraction site (socket closing) can take up to 2 weeks. A blood clot will form to protect the socket and expedite healing. Complete bone and gum tissue healing can take up to six months.
What can I expect after a tooth extraction?
It’s normal to experience some discomfort, swelling, and bleeding after a tooth extraction once you’re no longer under the effects of the anesthesia. Dr. Garazi can prescribe pain medication, or you can use OTC medication to ease these symptoms. For added comfort, you can rinse with warm salt water and place ice compresses on your cheek as well. Take care not to disturb the blood clot that forms at the extraction site, as it will aid with your healing.

How can I expedite my recovery after a tooth extraction?
Rest for a day or two after your procedure to help your body heal. Avoid strenuous activities that can delay your healing. Eat only soft foods that don’t require much chewing, and avoid drinking through a straw as it can dislodge the blood clot. Don’t smoke or drink alcoholic beverages for at least a few days after your extraction treatment.
